NATO's top military commander said the alliance is "ready to fight tonight" if it is attacked.
U.S. General Alexus Grynkewich spoke Monday.
He spoke at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland.
He said he does not think a war is coming soon.
He also said war is not certain.
He said the best way to keep peace is to prepare for war and keep talking.
Grynkewich said NATO would stop any first Russian attack.
If the attack continued, NATO would slow it down.
NATO would stop any advance, he said.
If needed, NATO would break the enemy's forces.
It would also break the systems that support them.
He gave no details about the kind of attack.
He did not say where it might happen.
European officials have warned about Russia.
They say Russia could test NATO with secret attacks.
Russia could also send a small number of soldiers into another country.
There were recent incidents.
Someone set fire to an Estonian defense company.
Someone also planned an attack on a Ukrainian aircraft at a German airport.
The plan failed.
Denmark's defense intelligence service said there is a "low but growing risk."
Russia might attack NATO countries that border Russia.
Grynkewich said NATO does not want war.
But he said NATO is unlikely to be surprised.
He said allies must work together on a "coherent" response.
They must make clear where their red lines are.
He said the answer to Russian sabotage should be more support for Ukraine.
His spokesperson said NATO nations are using more sensors and technology.
They want to find and stop drones.
