Drone pilot Manish Maharjan has been instrumental in aiding Nepalese rescue teams in their efforts to locate individuals who have been reported missing in the wake of last week's devastating floods, occasionally deploying loudspeakers affixed to his aircraft to communicate with or serenade those who remain stranded on the hillsides.

However, the endeavor to locate the hundreds of workers presumed to be entombed within the power plant's subterranean tunnels—now the paramount objective of the ongoing rescue initiative—constitutes an altogether disparate predicament, he remarked.

“We discovered the tunnels were entirely occluded with a toothpaste-like sludge,” Maharjan observed.

“No hollow or vacant cavity remained within.”

Maharjan, himself a filmmaker, enlisted in the Nepal Army's rescue operations a day after the August 26 flash floods, which have exacted a toll exceeding 1,000 lives and left countless individuals unaccounted for across Nepal and Tibet.

“We employed loudspeaker-equipped microphones to hail them.

In certain locales, we even broadcast musical selections and subsequently awaited a reply,” Maharjan stated.

“This approach proved efficacious in several instances, enabling us to pinpoint their whereabouts.”

The cataclysmic deluge precipitated by a glacial collapse inflicted extensive devastation upon critical infrastructure—encompassing roadways, edifices, bridges, and hydroelectric facilities—serving as the most recent manifestation of the escalating perils confronting the rapidly warming Himalayas.

At least 900 laborers remain unaccounted for across 12 hydropower undertakings entombed beneath mud and detritus, with approximately 500 of them presumed to be entrapped within subterranean power plant conduits.

According to Mohan Kumar Dangi, president of the Independent Power Producers’ Association, certain workers within the tunnels managed to summon assistance upon the onset of the catastrophe.

Nevertheless, it remains indeterminate whether rescue personnel have established any form of communication with the entrapped individuals since those initial pleas for aid.

As time inexorably ebbs away, the efforts of rescue personnel to locate these missing individuals are becoming progressively more arduous.

Maharjan, who has been deploying thermal drones within the tunnels, observed that the search operations proved exceptionally formidable, attributable to the terrain's inaccessibility and the utter absence of any unoccupied space.

“I am only able to pilot drones within tunnels that are both lengthy and rectilinear,” he remarked.

“Once the trajectory introduces curves, turns, or serpentine deviations, the efficacy of both navigation and reconnaissance diminishes considerably.”

At the Rasuwagadhi hydropower project on Monday, Maharjan succeeded in deploying a drone to probe the tunnel's profound recesses, traversing its entire length to the terminal point, yet discerned no vestige of life whatsoever.

“We conducted repeated inspections, yet it remained entirely obstructed by silt and debris,” he remarked.

“Surveying the scene, I could scarcely conceive of the sheer magnitude of the flood’s force.”
