Elon Musk, the world’s sole trillionaire, has quietly emerged as the foremost known benefactor of this year’s midterm elections, disbursing in excess of $276 million since July in a bid to preserve Republican majorities in Congress.
The figures, initially disclosed by The New York Times in advance of this week's federal filing deadline, were subsequently corroborated by Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for Musk's super PAC.
The sum encompasses $158 million allocated to the Senate Leadership Fund, the principal super PAC underwriting Republican Senate candidates—among the largest political donations ever recorded in American history, according to the Times.
A further $76 million was allocated to America PAC, a Musk-affiliated super PAC, which has once again assembled a substantial turnout apparatus akin to the one it deployed in 2024—canvassing door-to-door—to help elect President Donald Trump.
Musk likewise disbursed $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, an organisation dedicated to bolstering the Republican nominee for Senate in Texas, Ken Paxton.
This contest has constituted a principal locus of Musk’s endeavours.
It represents a dramatic volte-face from last May, when Musk professed his intention to curtail future political expenditure.
“I think I’ve done enough,” he remarked at the time.
Notwithstanding the substantial capital injection, Musk has by and large maintained a markedly more subdued public presence than was the case in 2024, when he shared the stage with Trump at rallies, and during the nascent phase of the president's second term, when he helmed the Department of Government Efficiency.
He had a falling out with Trump upon relinquishing his government post, yet the two have since reconciled.
Last week, Trump conferred upon Musk the National Medal of Science.
Musk’s net worth has oscillated around the trillion-dollar threshold throughout this year, contingent upon fluctuations in stock prices, yet he surpassed $1 trillion once more last week, as reported by Forbes magazine.
Republicans enjoy a yawning financial advantage over their Democratic counterparts — a disparity that has constituted a rare bright spot for a party bracing for potentially momentous losses amid profound voter disillusionment with the president’s performance, persistently exorbitant prices and the deeply unpopular war with Iran.
They have been deploying the funds to saturate the airwaves throughout the race's final stretch.
“These formidable capital injections have enabled the G.O.P. apparatus to disseminate its messaging so that Republicans might stand a fighting chance of defying history,” Romeo told the Times.
Democrats, in response to the news, levelled accusations against Republicans, alleging that they were deploying vast sums of cash to obscure their own deficiencies.
“Republicans are endeavoring to purchase these elections, injecting tens of millions into races in a bid to outpace their unpopular candidates, an unpopular president, and an unpopular economy,” said Lauren French, a spokesperson for Democrats’ Senate Majority PAC.
