Hurricane Rachel coalesced on Wednesday over the Pacific Ocean, yet the National Hurricane Center reported that it constituted no peril to any landmass.
Rachel was positioned approximately 380 miles (615 kilometers) due west of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, or roughly 220 miles (350 kilometers) southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico.
Its maximum sustained winds were registering at around 85 mph (140 kph), according to an advisory issued by the Miami-based hurricane center.
Forecasters warned that it was poised to undergo rapid intensification and might well escalate into a major hurricane.
The cyclone was tracking northwestward at 9 mph (15 kph), with forecasts indicating a subsequent veer toward the west-northwest and west later in the week, thereby receding from mainland Mexico and skirting south of the Baja California peninsula.
The hurricane center announced that the Mexican government had rescinded all coastal watches and warnings.
Hurricane-force winds radiated outward to distances reaching 25 miles (35 kilometers) from the storm's center, whilst tropical-storm-force winds extended outward as far as 160 miles (260 km).
In the central Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Nolo menaced perilous conditions for portions of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a marine conservation expanse.
Having formerly attained hurricane status, the storm saturated swaths of Hawaii’s Big Island over the weekend.
Its maximum sustained winds hovered near 50 mph (85 kph).
Pacific storm activity has exceeded the norm this year, a phenomenon consonant with El Niño years.
