Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the prelate charged with overseeing the Catholic Church’s pastoral ministry to Catholics serving in the U.S. military, is excoriating the proposed livestream of the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan.

Broglio, in a statement issued Monday, further stipulated that any Catholic soldier detailed to the U.S. Army firing squad ought to seek exemption from that duty, which he characterized as antithetical to the teachings of the church.

He aligns himself with other Catholic leaders in decrying both the death penalty and the livestream plans.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist convicted of the 2009 slayings of 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas, is slated to be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3.

Broglio recollected that he had presided over the funeral rites of Michael Grant Cahill, the sole civilian slain in that assault.

The crime committed by Hasan "was heinous, but does exposing the public to his execution serve any purpose?" Broglio asked.

“The US military generally enjoys a good reputation in the world,” Broglio added.

“Is there really any merit to consigning them to the same ignominious category as terrorists by broadcasting to the entire world the image of the execution of a man in a wheelchair?”
