The cargo airline that operated the plane which overran a Miami runway over Labor Day weekend, killing five people, lost one of its biggest customers when Amazon suspended its partnership with 21 Air, and it remains unclear whether the company will lose further business while the crash is under investigation.

On Sept. 6, a Boeing 767 laden with packages of contact lenses approached at high speed, then hurtled approximately 1,300 feet (396 meters) beyond the runway's end and collided with a van transporting workers employed by a plane cleaning company.

All five of those who perished were inside the van, while five others sustained injuries.

“Following the tragic incident last weekend, we have dedicated time to supporting the investigation and examining some of the surrounding circumstances, and we have resolved to suspend our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement.

“We will persist in our efforts to support the investigation and all those affected.”

The National Transportation Safety Board will scrutinize every factor that might have contributed to the crash in order to determine its cause.

This will encompass the actions of the pilots and air traffic controllers, as well as the jet’s maintenance history, the airline’s practices and the stormy weather at the time of the crash.

The North Carolina-based carrier has been transporting packages on Amazon's behalf since 2024.

The company likewise operates flights for DHL.

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, 21 Air leases its fleet of 18 aircraft, comprising 13 Boeing 767s and five 757s.

Of these, at least six are leased from Amazon affiliates and at least three from DHL.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting the families and loved ones affected by this accident, as well as collaborating closely with the NTSB and all our partners, such as Amazon, as the investigation proceeds,” 21 Air said in a statement.

“We have full confidence in our safety policies, procedures and training.”

DHL spokesman Robert Mintz declined on Monday to say whether the package hauler would continue to use 21 Air, citing “the ongoing investigation and the sensitive nature of the matter.”

“DHL continually evaluates its network and its relationships with service providers to ensure that we satisfy both our customers’ needs and our operational requirements,” Mintz said.

Flight information released by the NTSB on Sept. 9 revealed that one of the pilots had warned his counterpart that they were approaching too fast during their final approach and after touchdown.

The aircraft was unstable on its approach and did not touch down until it had travelled well past the designated landing point on the runway, thereby curtailing the distance available for it to come to a halt.

A tail wind may have served to propel the plane further along.

The cockpit audio recordings additionally captured a sequence of automated warnings emitted by the aircraft regarding its rate of descent and the terrain ahead.

The complete transcript of the cockpit conversation will not be disclosed until a later stage of the investigation.

The 32-year-old Boeing, originally designed for passenger transport, operated for several foreign airlines over a span of more than two decades before its conversion to a cargo plane in 2015, as reported by the flight-tracking website Flightradar24.
