At an appearance on Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled a “remarkably capable, always-on” artificial intelligence agent — a disclosure made a mere day after the company had suspended the rollout of a more advanced model amid safety concerns.
At the company’s annual developer conference, Altman unveiled a panoply of product announcements and updates, among them OpenAI’s new agents, designated Dots.
Conceived to execute ongoing tasks proactively on users’ behalf, these agents stand as a rival to Meta’s personal agent Muse, which surged in popularity following Meta’s own conference the previous week.
Dot agents will be “like an AI helper that always has your back, inspired by the cool versions of what we all watched in movies growing up,” Altman said.
On Monday, OpenAI announced that it was deferring the release of the other model owing to apprehensions voiced by its researchers.
This came on the heels of broader entreaties within the industry to temper the velocity of the technology's progression so that safety protocols might be afforded the opportunity to keep pace.
During his keynote address, Altman refrained from alluding to the apprehensions surrounding the shelved model, yet conceded in a question-and-answer session that the company was channelling greater resources into the safety, security and monitoring of AI agents.
He contended that the AI boom ought to be regarded less as an industrial revolution than as a species of renaissance.
“The optimal incarnation of AI is not one that reduces people to cogs in a gargantuan machine, perpetually whirring ever faster.
There are facets of life that we cannot — and ought not — automate,” Altman said.
“AI should be about affording people greater agency over their own lives, more instruments with which to create, learn, discover, and expand knowledge.”
The company further disclosed the launch of GPT-6.1 Sol—an enhanced iteration of its GPT-6 Sol model—alongside a premium velocity tier designated “Ultrafast,” among sundry other releases and refinements.
OpenAI’s announcements preceded, by a mere margin, the signing on Tuesday by leaders of six of the foremost AI companies—OpenAI among them—of a voluntary accord with President Donald Trump to “self-police” development.
The accord stipulated that the companies would institute “robust internal controls,” engage an “independent external auditor” to ascertain whether those controls were functioning effectively, and constitute a committee drawn from each company’s board of directors to evaluate reports emanating from both internal and external auditors.
Whereas numerous denizens of Silicon Valley have exhorted the government to assist in erecting guardrails for the technology, Trump has inveighed against the notion of augmented governmental oversight of AI.
Although Altman was conspicuously absent, OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman was in attendance at the White House, joined by Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
