Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season due to blood clots in his lungs, a person familiar with the situation said on Monday.
The individual addressed reporters under the condition of anonymity, citing the sensitive nature of a health-related matter.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday, two days after the Eagles disclosed that he has a blood clot in his calf.
He sat out the first of at least four games in Philadelphia’s loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, released further details regarding his condition on Monday.
They stated that Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, indicating that a blood clot has traveled from the legs to the lungs.
His treatment entails the use of blood thinners, and he will be precluded from engaging in any football activities until he has discontinued them.
The Eagles and Lynn stated that Hurts was anticipated to make a full recovery.
“He is clinically stable and exhibits no significant functional limitations,” their statement said.
The Eagles had previously stated that Hurts sustained an injury when he took a cleat to his calf area on Oct. 4 in a game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Hurts informed the medical staff of the injury following practice on Oct. 8.
The Super Bowl 59 MVP returned to practice the next day, before the team departed for London to face Jacksonville.
Hurts was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.
Since assuming the role of full-time starter in 2021, Hurts had not missed more than two games in a season.
He has guided the Eagles to five consecutive playoff appearances, three NFC East titles and two Super Bowl appearances, defeating the Chiefs 40-22 two years ago.
Tanner McKee assumed the starting role in place of Hurts for the encounter with the Panthers.
McKee completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ 25-14 loss to Carolina.
The Eagles (2-4) have now lost four consecutive games for the first time since 2020.
Hurts has recorded eight touchdown passes and three interceptions, along with 933 passing yards this season.
He is currently midway through a five-year, $255 million extension — including $179.3 million guaranteed — that will keep him with the team through the 2028 season.
The Eagles astonished fans by drafting Hurts out of Oklahoma in the second round in 2020.
They appeared to have Carson Wentz firmly entrenched at QB and to have more pressing needs.
Yet Hurts supplanted Wentz and went on to become one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.
