San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw received a one-game suspension after head-butting Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV, an incident that followed a late hit along the Seahawks sideline.
The NFL issued the suspension on Monday, asserting that the headbutt of a player without a helmet during Sunday’s 32-29 win against Seattle was “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Greenlaw is set to be absent from San Francisco’s game next Monday night against Washington, contingent upon an appeal.
Greenlaw has a well-documented history of infractions.
He has been ejected on two other occasions over the course of his career.
In 2023, he was involved in a sideline altercation with Dom DiSandro, Philadelphia’s head of security, and he was likewise disqualified in 2022 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Chargers’ Justin Herbert.
Greenlaw was also suspended for one game last season while playing in Denver, after he berated an official following a win over the New York Giants.
Greenlaw was fined $11,941 for taunting the Broncos’ sideline in the course of a victory last week.
The most recent infraction occurred in the second quarter on Sunday, when Sam Darnold scrambled and was struck late by Greenlaw after having gone out of bounds, resulting in a personal foul in a game San Francisco ultimately won 32-29.
Several Seahawks defenders immediately confronted Greenlaw in the wake of the hit, prompting Greenlaw to retaliate by head-butting Jones.
Jones was left bleeding as a consequence of the hit, and Greenlaw was subsequently ejected.
“You’re going to get baited in a major way, particularly when you’re on their bench,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game.
“They informed me that he had butted a guy without a helmet.
So if that’s precisely what transpired, then yes, we’ve got to be far more intelligent than that.
Can’t do that.”
Having plied his trade for the Broncos throughout the 2025 season, Greenlaw made his return to San Francisco this season, during which he has amassed 37 tackles across five games.
