Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, constitutes a form of expression that dates back more than 500 years.

It continues to flourish, quietly, not only among traditionalists but also among newcomers who find something restorative in its combination of creativity and mindfulness.

Ikebana can resemble, to a certain extent, the solving of a puzzle, except that there is no predetermined solution.

Since each flower, just like each person, is different, multiple solutions are possible.

"There is a purifying factor inherent in 'detox', as well as a kind of healing," affirms Hiroyuki Okada, 40, who began taking ikebana lessons roughly seven years ago.

He currently teaches Ikenobo, the oldest of the three main schools of ikebana.

Okada, who also teaches anyone willing to learn how to perform backflips, usually wears silver chains and jeans, although he dons an elegant kimono when he formally exhibits his arrangements.

She is regarded as representative of those who are drawn to ikebana today, people seeking joy, purpose, or solace in the face of the daily grind or the pain of modern life.

"When you set out to arrange (flowers), you are entering into a dialogue with the life that manifests itself there, with beauty, certainly, but you also come up against what lies nestled in your heart," said Okada.

"You confront yourself face to face."

"Te confrontas cara a cara contigo mismo".

The Ikenobo school, based in Kyoto and deeply rooted in Buddhism, currently has chapters spread throughout the world.

Okada's previous work at a non-profit organisation involved engaging in conversations with people from all over the world, and that was how she came to realise just how differentand yet at the same time similarpeople could be.

Upon moving to her current job at a flower shop, she chose to devote herself to an activity that was Japanese, in order to explore that side of herself and to ensure that it could be carried out over the long term, in solitude.

Ikebana involves engaging with nature, albeit on a reduced scale, usually in a vase of modest dimensions.

"It is about the creator's relationship with the flowers," stated Senko Ikenobo, the designated head of the Ikenobo school.

Her family traces its lineage back through generations to the founders of the art, and her father is the current head.

Jeannette Haviland-Jones, a professor of social psychology at Rutgers University, asserts that studies have demonstrated "that flowers and even the scents of flowers promote happiness in people.

We propose a coevolutionary theory in this regard, according to which flowers became the 'pets' of the plant world."

Besides the beauty and fragrance of a flower, the sensation its petals and leaves produce when touched proves crucial, much like stroking a kitten or a puppy, according to Okada.

There are young children who take their first steps in Ikenobo by imitating their mothers, just as there are devoted centenarians.

The designated director claims to have observed how ikebana helps ease the lives of women who juggle work and motherhood, or who take care of elderly parents.

Ikebana has a healing effect comparable to that of yoga, meditation, or play, says Mayu Shimizu, who works for an online education service and has been taking lessons with Okada for roughly three years.

"I find pleasure in this moment of emptiness in which you focus on the flowers in front of you," she says.

"My mind feels clearer.

"Mi mente se siente más lúcida.

I feel more at peace, and gentle."

Me siento más en paz, y gentil".

A traditional Ikenobo arrangement is the shoka shofutai, which seeks to arrange flowers, leaves, and branches as they might appear in nature, whether stretching toward the sunlight or bending with the wind.

The vase, sometimes made of wood or ceramic, also becomes part of the arrangement's vision.

Nevertheless, the overall appearance is presented in a pure and simple form, capturing the life cycle of the flowersfrom their blooming to their witheringthrough three main elements:

Shin, the tallest element, is placed first, embodying the core of one and rising toward the sky.

Soe, which is trimmed to roughly two-thirds of the height of the shin and placed to the side, expresses the individuality of the flower.

The leaves may be found slightly withered, thus representing the later stages of life.

Tai, the third element, represents the future.

Tai, el tercer elemento, representa el porvenir.

Opt for a flower or for small, fresh leaves: elements that are in the midst of germinating.

Likewise, there are derivative styles of a freer nature, which bear a greater resemblance to casual Western-style arrangements than to the stoic, manual-oriented shoka shofutai.

This can prove simpler, and more enjoyable, for those who are just starting out.

Just as ikebana connects a person with flowers, those who practise this art maintain that it is also about passing it down through the generations, building bridges between people.
