France would then take in the same number of asylum seekers.

These seekers used a safe and legal route.

About 1,500 people went back to France.

A little fewer went to the U.K.

The deal was for three years.

But either side could end it early.

The Home Office spoke.

It said Britain still works with France.

They want to stop small boat crossings.

It said there is real progress.

It said deportation flights will continue.

These flights are for people already held.

They will happen in the coming weeks.

Crossings are down a lot this year.

They are at a five-year low.

About 19,000 people came so far.

That is down about 40% from last year.

The Home Office said more police patrols helped.

It also said better watching in northern France helped.

The crossings are dangerous.

On Monday, a 10-year-old child died.

Two women also died.

They were on a boat with more than 100 people.

They were apparently stepped on and killed.

The U.K. left the European Union in 2020.

After that, the two countries did not work together well.

But they have signed some agreements since then.

Small boat crossings are a big political issue in the U.K.

They cause protests and riots.

They also help the hard-right Reform UK party.
