President Donald Trump welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday.

It was a state visit.

Trump said he and Xi built a "truly great friendship."

He said this since his first election in 2016.

He talked about this friendship at the start.

Then they had formal talks.

Xi spoke in a more serious way in public.

He said the two countries' interests are "deeply intertwined."

He said competition should stay "healthy" and fair.

He also warned about the "Thucydides trap."

This is the idea that a rising power and a strong power often go to war.

Xi said the relationship should be a race to catch up.

It should not be a game where one side wins and one side loses.

The two sides agreed on Wednesday to extend a trade truce.

The truce was for one year.

They extended it by two months.

It was going to end on Nov. 10.

Xi asked Trump to handle the Taiwan issue "prudently."

This is according to Chinese state media.

China wants the U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan forever.

China also wants the U.S. to loosen export rules on advanced chips.

Trump has called arms sales to Taiwan a "very good negotiating chip."

Xi also said China will invite 100,000 American young people to study there.

This will happen over the next five years.

He said China will send two pandas to the Atlanta zoo.

Both leaders said artificial intelligence was important.

Xi said AI must stay under human control.

Trump's red-carpet welcome drew criticism from lawmakers in both parties.
