A sexual assault trial began Monday.

It is for Jeffrey Buskey.

He is 60 years old.

He was a youth counselor.

He is from Litchfield, New Hampshire.

People say he assaulted four boys.

The boys were at the Youth Development Center in Manchester.

This was in the late 1990s.

The first case is about David Meehan.

He was 14 years old.

He came to the center in 1995.

Buskey faces 21 charges in this case.

Meehan filed the first lawsuit.

There are more than 1,100 lawsuits about the center.

They cover over 60 years.

His words led to Buskey's arrest in 2019.

They led to nine more arrests.

They led to a money fund for victims.

A prosecutor asked Meehan about the center.

He asked what it meant to him.

Meehan said, "Hell."

Meehan said Buskey gave him soda and snacks.

He let him play basketball.

Then Buskey raped him almost every day.

A jury gave Meehan $38 million in May 2024.

But the state wants to lower it to $475,000.

Thomas Velardi is an Associate Attorney General.

He spoke first.

He said Meehan planned to keep it secret all his life.

He said Meehan told his wife in 2017.

Meehan feared one son might go to the center.

Velardi said Buskey used violence and threats.

He overpowered Meehan.

Meehan stopped fighting back.

Police asked Buskey questions.

Buskey said he did not abuse Meehan.

He said they had a "great relationship."

Delia McCarthy is a defense lawyer.

She told the jury there is no evidence.

She said Meehan's room was in a central hallway.

The building was "like an echo chamber."

So a violent attack could not go unseen.

She said Meehan has mental illness.

He has delusions and hallucinations.

She called his story "an unbelievable story."

She said he is not a reliable witness.

The center is now called the Sununu Youth Services Center.

It will close.

A smaller building will replace it.

In other cases, three former workers were found guilty.
