Landowners, ranchers and business owners in Texas’s Big Bend region are suing to stop the Trump administration’s border wall plans.

The group Conserve Big Bend and six landowners filed the lawsuit.

Dozens of others along the border support them.

The administration is spending $46 billion on walls, barriers and technology along the roughly 2,000-mile southern border.

In Texas, the effort has faced many lawsuits and bipartisan opposition.

Sheriffs, officials, tour guides, environmental groups and landowners have all objected.

David Keller is an archaeologist and historian who lives in the region.

He said officials were unprepared for the opposition.

He said the Big Bend is not an empty place on the map, but their home.

The administration has waived environmental, archaeological and wildlife regulations.

It cited an urgent need in areas of “high illegal entry.”

The plaintiffs argue that description is wrong for Big Bend.

They cite Customs and Border Protection statistics about the region.

It has about 500 miles of border, about one quarter of the total, but only about 1% of arrests.

Laura Allen is a two-time Trump voter and former county judge.

Her family ranch would be cut by the wall.

She said arrests have dropped further since Trump returned to office.

She thanked Trump for securing the border and said it was time to let it go.

The plaintiffs argue Homeland Security is misusing Congress-given powers to waive regulations.

The lawsuit is the latest effort to slow the administration’s plans in Texas and elsewhere.
