Five people were killed when an Amazon cargo jet ran off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday.

All of them were inside a van used to shuttle plane-cleaning crews, authorities said.

The jet hit the van on airport property, then crashed through a fence and struck an SUV on a city street.

Five other people were injured.

The pilot and co-pilot have been released from the hospital, said Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.

Two people remain in critical condition, and a third is in stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

One focus is the lack of a system to slow and stop speeding jets at the end of runways.

Miami is not among 120 U.S. airports with lightweight, crushable material that the Federal Aviation Administration says has saved about 500 lives.

Experts said Miami appears compliant with federal rules because it has a 1,000-foot safety buffer.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said runway excursions keep happening even after the board suggested installing such systems.

She said recommendations must be implemented or similar tragedies will occur again.

Investigators recovered the flight data recorder and are reviewing it.

They also plan to interview the pilot, co-pilot, and air traffic controllers.

The five victims were employees of Professional Ocean Service Corp., a plane-cleaning company.

The company said it would not comment out of respect for the families.

The sheriff identified the deceased as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47.

The jet was landing after a flight from Puerto Rico as storms gathered.

The NTSB said the plane traveled about 1,300 feet past the runway’s end.

Strong winds over 25 knots were reported, and experts said a tail wind may have pushed the plane past its landing point.

It is not clear why the pilot did not abort the landing.

Two of the airport’s four runways remained closed Tuesday, and more than 225 flights were canceled Sunday and Monday.
