The U.S. President, Donald Trump, has entreated Apple to rechristen Lake Ontario as “Lake America” within its cartographic application, as divulged by his administration’s Secretary of the Interior on Monday—mere days subsequent to his issuance of an executive decree pertaining to the waterway, which has now assumed prominence amid his intensifying commercial hostilities with Canada.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum informed Fox’s “Mornings with Maria” program that Trump “reached out to Apple directly,” expressing confidence that the “Lake America” designation would soon be discernible on its platform.

Apple proffered no immediate commentary in response; as of Monday afternoon, only the appellation "Lake Ontario" had manifested itself upon its platform.

Over the course of a single weekend, Google Maps, the competitor, unveiled the designation “Lake America” for users in the United States consulting the expanse of water situated between New York State and the Canadian province of Ontario.

The corporation invoked the recent executive order issued by Trump, alongside its long-established convention of adhering to the nomenclature promulgated by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, commonly abbreviated as GNIS.

Google, in a terse communiqué issued on Saturday, affirmed that users of its mapping service within the United States will be presented with the designation “Lake America,” whereas their counterparts in Canada will continue to encounter “Lake Ontario,” and individuals situated beyond both nations will observe the two appellations displayed concurrently, reiterating that such modifications “follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country.”

Trump proclaimed the new designation “Lake America” last week — constituting one of the latest provocations in his trade war with Canada, which is now escalating tariffs on both sides of the border.

His executive order, issued on Friday, directed the Department of the Interior to amend the lake’s nomenclature within the U.S. geographic naming system.

The president, however, lacks the authority to compel Canada's compliance, and America's northern neighbors were quick to dismiss the proposal outright.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Seneca Nation in upstate New York asserted that the measure contravenes a treaty exceeding 225 years in standing, constituting a "blatant disrespect" for the Indigenous peoples who originally bestowed upon Lake Ontario its name.

This is not the first occasion on which Trump has sought to rechristen waters extending beyond the nation's borders.

In the preceding year, Trump issued an executive directive mandating that the Gulf of Mexico be redesignated the Gulf of America — a nomenclature subsequently adopted by both Apple and Google in their respective mapping services within the United States.
