As reported by Chinese regulatory bodies on Friday, Tesla, in conjunction with other domestic automakers, is undertaking a sweeping recall encompassing upwards of four million vehicles, driven predominantly by safety apprehensions centered on their door-handle assemblies.
Per the directive of China's State Administration for Market Regulation, the American automotive manufacturer is orchestrating a comprehensive recall of approximately 2.98 million units—encompassing both domestically produced and imported electric vehicles, namely the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S—owing to latent safety hazards associated with their door handle assemblies.
The recall, the most extensive of its kind this year according to Chinese media, transpires merely months after Chinese authorities declared in February that, commencing the following year, they would prohibit the concealed door handles ubiquitous on Tesla electric vehicles and numerous domestic EV models.
China has recently intensified its scrutiny of concealed, or flush, vehicular door handles in the wake of electric-vehicle accidents both domestically and abroad, wherein the vehicles' hidden electronic doors malfunctioned, thereby entrapping occupants within the cabin.
In a notice published on the Chinese regulator’s website, it cited safety risks, noting that in extreme scenarios—such as a severe collision precipitating an electrical system failure—the car handles could impede occupants from rapidly opening the doors to evacuate, or obstruct external rescuers from gaining entry.
The notice further stipulated that Tesla would execute over-the-air software updates on the affected vehicles as a risk-mitigation measure.
As of Friday, Tesla had not yet issued a formal response to inquiries for comment.
Xiaomi, the Beijing-based Chinese technology behemoth, is initiating a recall of over 390,000 vehicles, while Hangzhou-headquartered Leapmotor is recalling upwards of 370,000 cars.
Additional Chinese automakers, including Geely and XPENG, are likewise undertaking recalls of select vehicles.
The justifications proffered in each instance were remarkably analogous, predominantly pertaining to malfunctions of their vehicular door handles.
A report published by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party, asserted that the large-scale recall “serves as a unified safety upgrade” for existing vehicle models ahead of the 2027 implementation of the ban on hidden car door handles.
"For the rapidly evolving NEV (new energy vehicle) industry, competition should be defined not only by the pace of technological innovation but also by the high standards set for safety," the newspaper said.
