On Thursday, the Donald Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to once again clear the way for it to continue rapidly deporting immigrants to third countries with which they have no ties.

The government requested an immediate halt to a lower court order requiring that immigrants be given an opportunity to contest their deportation before being sent to a country other than their homeland.

When this case was brought before them last year, the judges had provisionally allowed the deportation flights to continue.

Subsequently, the appeals court upheld the final ruling of a Boston judge, which held that immigrants must be guaranteed a substantive opportunity to argue that deportation to a third country would expose them to the risk of persecution or torture.

Although this ruling did not completely ban such deportations, it does prolong the procedures.

The government claims that, as a result, flights to transfer 70 people with criminal convictions to three countries have already been halted.

Acting Attorney General D. John Sauer wrote, "In recent months, the government has made it possible to deport thousands of foreigners to third countries, and thousands more could be subject to such deportations."

The Trump Republican administration states that when swift repatriation to their home country is not possible, it transfers people to third countries.

According to the lawyers, these third-country governments have provided assurances that the individuals in question will not be subjected to persecution or torture.

The lawyers write that the legal requirements imposed by the lower courts could trigger a chain of delays, potentially forcing a renegotiation of agreements with foreign countries.

James Percival, the chief legal counsel at the Department of Homeland Security, said on Wednesday on X that 25,000 people unlawfully present in the United States had been deported to third countries, calling these deportations "an indispensable public safety measure."

Some found themselves in countries they had never even heard of until they arrived.

Others face grave security risks and have little choice but to return to the very homeland they fled.

This month, lawyers for two men who were forcibly deported to Equatorial Guinea stated that the police had placed bags over their heads, beaten them in a detention facility converted from a hotel, and pointed guns at them.

"The look my wife gave me when I told her we had deported 25,000 illegal immigrants to a third country," Percival wrote.
