On Wednesday, the British government announced that a pilot programme between the UK and France, intended to curb the influx of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, had been scrapped.

In a statement, the Home Office said that the so-called "one in, one out" agreement "is no longer processing new cases."

Under this plan, those who arrived in the UK after making the dangerous Channel crossing could be detained and sent back to France in exchange for an equal number of asylum seekers who had applied through safe and legal routes.

As part of the agreement, around 1,500 people were sent back to France, while a slightly smaller number were transferred to the UK.

The agreement was intended to remain in force for three years, but it included a provision allowing either party to terminate it early.

The Home Office said in a statement: "We continue to work with France with the aim of taking firm action against small boat crossings, and progress is indeed being made."

Although this system has already ceased to be in effect, the Interior Ministry made it clear that, with regard to those currently in detention, deportation flights are expected to continue operating over the coming weeks.

The current situation is markedly different from last year.

As a result of a combination of factors, including intensified police patrols and stricter surveillance in northern France, the number of travellers has plummeted this year to its lowest level in five years.

Only about 19,000 people have made the crossing so far this year, a decline of roughly 40% compared with the same period last year.

The dangers associated with the journey were made clear on Monday.

On a boat carrying more than 100 people, a 10-year-old child and two women are believed to have been crushed to death.

Cooperation to stop the boats stalled after the UK's acrimonious departure from the European Union in 2020, but over the past few years Britain and France have concluded several agreements aimed at getting this problem under control.

In recent years, crossings by small boats have become a prominent political issue in the UK.

Anger at the apparent inability of successive governments to get a grip on the issue lies behind a series of protests and riots, and it is fuelling the rise of the far-right Reform UK party.
