On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that 50 investigators are looking into the fire at a Canadian military base that killed four soldiers and injured 39 others.

Questions are growing as to why training continued even though the authorities were aware that a fire was spreading nearby.

In Parliament in Ottawa, Prime Minister Carney said that the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is leading the investigation, with support from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, into Saturday's disaster at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

The members of parliament observed a moment of silence before Prime Minister Carney delivered his speech in the House of Commons.

The opposition party leaders also expressed their condolences.

Prime Minister Carney said the following.

"A fire was raging in the training area.

Fanned by fierce winds, the flames spread in less than a minute to a spot nearly a kilometre away where soldiers had gathered."

The prime minister stated that investigators have not yet managed to identify the cause of the grassland fire.

Prime Minister Carney later told reporters, "We intend to clarify the cause of this terrible disaster with all the speed and transparency that is required."

The fire struck army reservists who were conducting live-fire training with soldiers from the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

As of Monday, 19 of the injured remained in a serious condition.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who represents Wainwright in Parliament and was visiting the town, said many people had suffered severe burns requiring weeks to months of intensive care, and warned that their lives might never be the same again.

Major General Wade Rutland said on Sunday that although military authorities had been aware of the fire for several hours, they judged it to have been contained and allowed the training to continue until the wind direction suddenly changed.

About 84 soldiers from Charlie Company were engaged in training at two locations; at one of them they were practising hand-grenade throwing, and at the other they were conducting an assault exercise against a simulated enemy position.

The fire struck the second training area.

Prime Minister Carney said that the soldiers had been preparing for the reinforcement of the Canadian Forces, which will take on a NATO mission in Latvia next spring.

Major General Rutland said investigators would examine whether the wind had driven the flames toward the soldiers or whether the fire had spread unseen through the vegetation.

He also indicated that they would consider whether the military's safety procedures needed to be changed.

The military identified the deceased as Sergeant Morgan Wong of Edmonton, Private Sean Farrell of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Private Aidan Goulding of North Vancouver, British Columbia, and Private Hayden Rickelmark of Langley in the same province.

Prime Minister Carney remembered Goulding as someone who willingly took on difficult challenges, and Wong as someone his family could always rely on.

Farrell and Rickelmark were close friends, and he said Rickelmark had dreamed of a career in law enforcement.

The party leader Poilievre recalled meeting Goulding at a Canada Day celebration held at the base in July.

At that time, a group of young soldiers came up to him asking for a photo.

After Saturday's tragedy, that photo, which identifies one of the dead as Goulding, was sent to him by someone.

Poilievre also said he had heard stories of soldiers who threw themselves into the flames to save their comrades, and he described their actions as an extraordinary display of courage.

Military liaison officers were engaged in supporting families at hospitals in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, and Wainwright, and mental health teams and military chaplains were also supporting soldiers and their families.

This is a stone clock tower honouring soldiers who lost their lives in past conflicts, and it still stands today, having survived the devastating fire that struck central Wainwright in 1929.

"They devoted themselves to training in order to defend Canada.

To serve Canada.

And now it is Canada's turn to serve them," Prime Minister Carney said.
