Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told world leaders on Thursday that allegations of genocide by Israel in Gaza were not only false but constituted "the biggest lie of the century."

The prime minister delivered a defiant speech asserting his country's right to wage war against Iran, but because numerous delegations walked out before he began speaking, his words never reached them.

Raising his voice, Netanyahu stated that attacking Iran was "one of the easiest decisions I have ever had to make," and condemned the large number of delegations that had walked out of the UN General Assembly as he took the podium as "moral cowards."

"In defending itself, Israel is also protecting many of the countries to which the delegations that just left this chamber belong," Netanyahu said.

"In fact, I want you to know that many of their leaders have even privately thanked us for eliminating Iran's nuclear weapons."

As Netanyahu approached the podium, cheers, boos, and a large-scale walkout all mixed together.

Numerous delegations walked out, and afterwards, most of the visible seats were left empty.

"Please maintain order in the chamber," General Assembly President Harilur Rahman repeatedly said.

"If there are any other moral cowards who have not yet walked out, please leave now," Netanyahu said.

At times, his remarks sounded like a campaign speech delivered while Israel was preparing for an election, and this came after world leaders had spent a week giving speeches condemning Israel over genocide and war crimes in Gaza.

The Palestinian delegation to the United Nations sent a message to many of the 193 UN member states, urging them to bring as many staff members as possible to the General Assembly hall and, when the Israeli Prime Minister's taking of the podium is announced, to "walk out of the General Assembly as a group."

"This will send a clear message to Mr. Netanyahu and his government that no actor is prepared to support, participate in, or collude with its genocide, war crimes, and illegal occupation.

All peace-loving nations and peoples are demanding that it come to an end," the message stated.

Israel denies the allegations that it has committed genocide and war crimes and that it is illegally occupying Palestinian territory.

Although all Israeli settlements are illegal under international law, the Israeli government maintains that they are legal.

Netanyahu tends to make use of visual aids in his speeches at the UN General Assembly, and at one point he held up a pager, reminding the audience of 17 September 2024, the day Israel remotely detonated thousands of pagers that had been distributed to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group.

The pager attack injured more than 3,000 people and killed 12, including two children.

At the General Assembly, he reminded the audience of the scale of the attack on October 7, 2023.

In that attack, Hamas fighters killed approximately 1,200 people.

"This is equivalent to 40,000 innocent Americans being killed within 24 hours," he said, pointing out that this amounts to 16 times the death toll of the 9/11 attacks, in which about 3,000 people died in New York.

Netanyahu expressed his gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for taking decisive action against Iran, and asserted that Israel would continue to achieve victory.

"Because we have no other choice."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

Because the United States denied attendance visas to Abbas and other senior Palestinian officials for the second consecutive year, a recorded message was broadcast from his office in Ramallah.

Both the 90-year-old leader's popularity at home and his importance abroad are waning.

In his speech, however, Abbas made it clear that he has no intention of quietly accepting being pushed aside.

Abbas stated, "We will not leave our homeland. Nor will we accept displacement. And we will not allow anyone to decide our future on our behalf."

Although world leaders repeatedly brought up the suffering of the Palestinians in speeches over the course of a week, Abbas urged the international community to take more concrete action against Israel.

Abbas said the following.

"How long will some countries remain silent toward Israel, or continue supplying the weapons used against our people?

The world is witnessing the enormous toll in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

So then, what exactly is the international community waiting for before it takes action to protect the Palestinians?"

Over the past few years, Netanyahu has used his speeches at the UN General Assembly as a platform to accuse the UN of bias, and at the same time as an opportunity to explain Israel's position to world leaders.

His speech, scheduled for Israeli prime time, is the centerpiece of a shortened visit to the United States, unfolding under the shadow of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani calling him a "war criminal" and demanding his arrest.

While acknowledging that New York City has no authority to enforce an International Criminal Court arrest warrant, Mamdani urged federal authorities to carry it out.

Throughout the Gaza war, Israel has been forced into ever-deeper isolation.

The war erupted on 7 October 2023, when Hamas-led fighters attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251.

According to the Gaza health ministry, at least 73,922 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive that followed.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, and its figures are generally regarded by the international community as reliable.

The ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hamas last October halted the most intense fighting and led to the release of the remaining hostages, yet subsequent measures have stalled.

Israel continues to control most of Gaza and is still carrying out airstrikes on Palestinians near the militarily occupied areas.

Hamas has neither disarmed nor relinquished power, and there has been no progress toward rebuilding the largely devastated territory.

Netanyahu has stated that no Palestinian state will be established as long as he remains Israel's leader, and he has consistently argued that the Palestinian Authority is not a partner for peace.

Netanyahu dismissed the violent incidents perpetrated by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank as the work of "a handful of young delinquents" who throw stones, cut down olive trees, and set fires.

"I cannot tolerate such things. I will not permit vigilante acts," the prime minister stated, and then accused foreign leaders and the international news media of distorting the scale of the violence in the West Bank.

The Netanyahu government is dominated by settlers and their allies, including a minister who oversees the police.

Settlers involved in attacks on Palestinians are almost never arrested.

Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 war, and Palestinians seek both as part of a future state.

Palestinians and the majority of the international community regard the settlements as illegal and view them as an obstacle to the creation of a viable and contiguous Palestinian state.
