On Tuesday, 36 people were killed and 207 were injured in Gaza when Palestinians trying to get aid were shot. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported this.
Experts and aid workers say that Israel's blockade and military actions over the last 20 months have caused Gaza to be very close to a severe food shortage.
More than 160 people have died and almost 1,500 have been hurt in shootings near aid centers. These centers are run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which gets help from Israel and the U.S. The centers are in military areas where independent journalists cannot go. The Israeli army has said they fired warning shots before at people who seemed suspicious near their soldiers.
The organization says there has been no violence at the places where aid is given out. However, they have told people to stay on specific paths and stopped deliveries last week to talk with the army about making things safer.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there has been "good progress" on a possible ceasefire deal. This deal could also bring back some of the 55 hostages still in Gaza. However, he also said it was "too early to be hopeful." Also on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar mentioned that there was progress in the ceasefire discussions.
Nasser Hospital reports that at least eight people died in southern Gaza near Rafah, as they were trying to get aid.
In northern Gaza on Tuesday, two men and a child died, and at least 130 people were injured. Nader Garghoun, a spokesperson for al-Awda Hospital, said that most of the injured people were being treated for gunshot wounds.
Witnesses said Israeli forces started shooting at about 2 a.m., a few hundred meters from the aid distribution point in central Gaza. Palestinians, who really need food, often go to these places long before sunrise to avoid big crowds.
The Israeli military reported that they fired warning shots at people they thought were suspects. They said these individuals had approached their soldiers a few hundred meters from the aid site before it opened.
Mohammed Abu Hussein, who lives in the nearby Bureij refugee camp, said that Israeli drones and tanks started shooting, and he saw five people get hurt by gunshots.
Another witness, Abed Haniyah, said that Israeli forces shot without aiming as thousands of people were trying to reach the food distribution site.
He said that every day was humiliating, and people were dying just to get food for their children.
The health ministry also reported that three Palestinian medics died in an Israeli attack in Gaza City on Tuesday.
Medics from the health ministry were helping people after an Israeli attack on a house in Gaza City when a second attack hit the same building, the ministry reported. The Israeli military did not comment on this attack, but they said their air force had hit many Hamas military targets, like rocket launchers, in the past day.
The U.N. has turned down the proposed new aid system.
Israel and the United States state that they established the new food distribution system to prevent Hamas from stealing humanitarian aid and using it to fund militant actions.
The United Nations has a system that has been providing aid to all areas of Gaza for a long time, and they state there is no evidence of it being systematically misused.
Several UN organizations and large aid groups are refusing to work with the new system. They think it goes against humanitarian principles because it lets Israel decide who receives help and forces Palestinians to move to only three open locations.
The other two aid centers are in Rafah, a city in the south that is now mostly empty because Israel has made it a military area. Israeli soldiers control the areas around all three centers, so Palestinians have to go near them to get the aid.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has talked about making a 'safe area' in Rafah, where there would be no Hamas, and moving everyone in the region there. He has also said that Israel will help many of Gaza's 2 million Palestinians move to other countries if they want to. But many countries and the Palestinians themselves do not agree with these plans, seeing them as forcing people to leave their homes.
Hamas started the war by attacking southern Israel on October 7, 2023. In this attack, Palestinian fighters killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people as hostages. They are still holding 55 hostages, and fewer than half of them are still alive. Most of the other hostages were released during agreements to stop fighting or through other deals.
Gaza's Health Ministry states that Israel's military actions have resulted in the deaths of almost 55,000 Palestinians. The ministry reports that most of those killed were women and children, but it doesn't differentiate between civilians and soldiers. Israel claims to have killed more than 20,000 militants, but it hasn't shown any proof.
The war has caused a lot of damage in Gaza, and about 90% of its people have had to leave their homes, often more than once.
