On Monday, Thailand began to restrict its land borders, stopping tourists from going into Cambodia. This action is a response to a disagreement about the border between Thailand and Cambodia.
The relationship between the two countries has gotten worse since an armed fight on May 28th in a disputed area, where a Cambodian soldier died. Even though both sides have agreed to calm down the situation, they continue to take or threaten actions that keep things difficult.
On Monday, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that Thailand will increase checks at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. Only students, people who need medical care, and those buying necessary items will be allowed to enter or leave the country.
She said the new rules were meant to stop people from going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it looked like all tourists would be stopped.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia in five provinces. They also said that only people with very important reasons would be allowed to cross.
Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services and blocked electricity and fuel from Thailand because of a border disagreement. Before this, Cambodia got 30% of its gasoline and other fuel from Thailand.
On Monday, Paetongtarn also stated that Thailand will consider stopping exports that could help scam operations in Cambodia. They will also cooperate with other countries and international organizations to stop cybercrime in Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took steps to stop online scams in Myanmar by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to border towns where these scams were happening.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a main place for scam operations. In these operations, workers use the internet to trick people with fake romantic relationships, false investment chances, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has faced criticism for her mild approach to Cambodia, particularly from right-wing nationalists who have always been against her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, who is Cambodia's Senate President and former Prime Minister, was leaked. This caused a lot of anger and led to demands for Paetongtarn's resignation.
Critics said she tried to please Hun Sen, who was a long-time friend of her father. They thought this made Thailand look weak because she called a Thai army commander in the disputed border area "an opponent." Because of this, several nationalist groups have planned a protest this week to ask for Paetongtarn's resignation.
