After 12 days of conflict that affected the Middle East, Israel and Iran accepted a ceasefire plan suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday. This agreement followed Iran's retaliatory missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. Before agreeing to the deal, Iran launched a final series of missiles at Israel, killing at least five people early Tuesday. In response, Israel carried out many airstrikes on various locations in Iran before dawn.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire, with the help of the US. He informed Israel's security cabinet that they had achieved all their goals during the 12-day operation against Iran. These goals included reducing the threat from Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Netanyahu also stated that Israel had damaged Iran's military leaders and some government buildings, and had taken control of the skies over Tehran. He warned that Israel would respond strongly if the ceasefire was broken.
Israel launched strong attacks on Iranian cities until almost 4 a.m. After that, Iran fired missiles, making Israelis rush into bomb shelters as the sun came up. These attacks killed at least five people and injured eight others, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services. Iranian missiles killed five people in Israel and damaged at least three crowded apartment buildings in Beersheba, police said. Emergency teams found five bodies in one building and looked for more. At least 20 people were hurt. Outside, burned cars were on the streets, and broken glass and rubble were everywhere. Hundreds of emergency workers searched for anyone else stuck in the buildings. Police said some people were injured even inside their reinforced safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets and small pieces from explosions, but not direct hits from large missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was hit right before Trump announced a ceasefire. He stated that Israel and Iran had agreed to a "complete and total ceasefire." This announcement came shortly after Iran launched a small missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. This attack was in response to the U.S. bombing Iran's nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. beforehand, so no one was injured. Trump announced on Truth Social that the ceasefire, starting around midnight Washington time, would "officially end" the war. He named the conflict the "12 Day War." This name is similar to the "Six Day War" in 1967, when Israel fought against several Arab countries. Trump's choice of words is significant for the Arab world, especially Palestinians.
In the 1967 war, Israel took the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai Peninsula back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to stay anonymous, said that Trump talked directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff spoke with the Iranians in different ways. The White House thinks that the bombing on Saturday helped convince the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire, and that the Qatari government helped make the deal happen. It is not clear what role Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had in the talks. He had said before on social media that he would not give up.
Because of Iran's missile attacks, officials had to close the country's airspace to important flights for several hours. Israeli news reported that some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea. Even though Israeli airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, a few emergency flights had recently begun to arrive and depart. Qatar Airways started its flights again early on Tuesday after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight data showed commercial planes were flying in Qatari airspace again, which meant that Doha thought the danger to the country was over.
Recent fighting in Israel has led to many deaths, with at least 29 people killed and over 1,000 injured. A group called Human Rights Activists, based in Washington, reports that Israeli attacks on Iran have killed at least 974 people and injured 3,458 others. This group identified 387 of those killed as civilians and 268 as security personnel. The U.S. government has helped about 250 American citizens and their close family members leave Israel using government and private planes. It is believed that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
