A California couple is charged with murder.

Police say they shot their son-in-law.

It happened on Saturday in a public park.

The killing came days before a court date.

He and their daughter had a divorce hearing.

Shili Chen and Shouyong Zhang are both 77.

They must go to court on Wednesday.

Their daughter is Candice Jang.

She could not be reached.

But she came to the hearing on Wednesday by video.

Jonathan McKinsey was 40 years old.

He worked as a gaming engineer.

He worked for The New York Times.

He was shot in a parking lot.

The parking lot is at a sports complex in Dublin.

Dublin is east of San Francisco.

A police sergeant was driving nearby.

He saw McKinsey on the ground.

Witnesses called 911.

They pointed out the couple.

The couple was still near the scene.

Dublin Police Services said this.

Court records show the killing came during a hard divorce.

There was also a custody fight.

The fight was over three young children.

Last year, McKinsey and Jang filed restraining order petitions.

They each said the other was abusive.

This went back more than ten years.

McKinsey was transgender.

He said Jang and her parents were abusive.

He said they were abusive about his gender transition.

He said the abuse was verbal and physical.

He also said Zhang punched him in the chest.

This happened while he recovered from surgery.

McKinsey was arrested last October.

He was charged with misdemeanor child abuse.

Police said he hit their oldest son.

He said he was not guilty.

In court records, he said his wife set him up.

He was released on one condition.

He had to finish 12 parenting classes.

At the time of his killing, he was out on bail.

He was trying to enter a mental health diversion program.
