A drug task force in Mississippi is warning people to stay away from kratom.
This warning came after police found packages of the substance.
Police were investigating the deaths of two University of Mississippi students.
The task force said on Tuesday that there is no proof kratom caused either death.
The students were found on Monday afternoon.
They were in two different places.
One was on campus and one was off campus.
A university spokesperson said this.
On Thursday, the school named them.
One was Aidan Hamilton.
He was a freshman from Englewood, Colorado.
The other was Robert Strang.
He was a junior from Atlanta.
The university said their families want privacy while they are sad.
Police said they found no proof the deaths were connected.
They said the kratom found at the scenes was sold at a store.
But they did not name the store.
They also did not say if anyone would be charged.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said two state agencies are working to speed up drug tests.
He also said the state is praying for the families and friends of the two students.
Kratom is a plant extract.
At low doses it speeds you up.
At high doses it calms you down.
It is legal under federal law.
But some states and local governments have banned it.
The FDA warns that kratom has risks.
These include liver damage, seizures, and drug addiction.
The FDA says people should not use it.
Supporters, like the American Kratom Association, say pure kratom is a safe natural supplement.
They say it can help with pain and with stopping opioid use.
