Eight people died.
A small plane crashed in foggy weather.
It crashed near a remote military radar site.
The site is on Alaska's southwestern coast.
The victims included two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers employees.
They also included two pilots and four other passengers.
The plane was a twin-engine Cessna 441.
It left Anchorage.
It was going to the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport.
That airport is about 450 miles west.
The radar site is from the 1950s.
It was built to warn of a Soviet missile attack.
Now, it watches the skies toward Russia, North Korea, and China.
The airport has a gravel airstrip on a mountain slope.
The Federal Aviation Administration tells pilots to use GPS and instruments to land there.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis called the victims "dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment."
He said the loss was very sad for the military family and communities.
The weather was changing then.
Heavy fog was moving in.
An automated system said visibility was about 10 miles just before the crash.
But it dropped to less than one-quarter mile about 15 minutes after.
A meteorologist said this.
Her name is Carrie Haisley.
The site closed in 1983.
A new radar was installed.
Now, civilian contractors visit only for maintenance.
The Army Corps said the two employees were part of a project delivery team.
They support the U.S. Air Force.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators were going to the scene on Friday.
Senator Lisa Murkowski said the flight was operated by Security Aviation.
That is an Anchorage charter company.
She offered condolences.
