On Monday, they found the last person who was missing from a boat. The boat turned over on Lake Tahoe during a big storm at the weekend. Eight people died in total.
On Saturday afternoon, a boat with ten people turned over near D.L. Bliss State Park. A storm caused big waves, and that made the boat flip. This information came from the U.S. Coast Guard. The boat was 27 feet (8 meters) long.
Two people were saved quickly and went to a hospital, but we don't know how they are. Six dead people were found later on Saturday. On Sunday evening, another dead person was found, the police said. Divers looked in the lake and found the last dead person on Monday afternoon.
Kyle Parker said they will not tell the names of the people who died until their families know.
People have drowned or died in accidents in the lake in the last few years. Accidents with boats where many people die are not common. In 2022, the South Lake Tahoe Police said that about six people die in the lake each summer. But in 2021, a lot more people died, about 15. The police don't have the newest numbers yet.
The strong thunderstorm was a surprise, even for weather experts. They knew it would rain, but it was much stronger than they thought. Matthew Chyba, a weather expert, said the storm hit the south part of the lake around 3 p.m. The wind was strong, and the waves were very big.
"We didn't think it would be that strong," Chyba said.
He said it was much colder than usual there, and this might have made the air not stable.
Chyba said that the eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "pretty big". He said, "They were really moving the lake a lot."
Lake Tahoe is a well-known place for summer fun, like boating and kayaking. This beautiful, cold lake sits between California and Nevada and is one of the deepest lakes in the United States.
The officials haven't given any information about the people on the boat that sank. They also haven't said if the boat was rented or if it was their own.
The storm that happened on Saturday was over in around two hours.
Brittany Glick was on a boat she rented with seven friends for a party on Saturday. They were celebrating a friend who was getting married. The wind started to get stronger and the waves became bigger. The day started sunny, but then it got colder and they couldn't see very well, Glick said on Monday.
"It felt like a big wave was coming. I had never felt anything like it before," she said.
After about an hour, the boat returned to the dock. The water became very rough, making the passengers wet. Then, it started to hail.
"It was scary to see all the boats turned over," Glick said. "We were very cold and wet. We were shaking a lot. Our feet felt numb and our toes were turning blue. It was one of the scariest times in my life. The storm arrived very fast. It was terrifying."
KCRA-TV got a video. It showed boats at a marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
