Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a builder from Maryland, said in a Tennessee court that he did not smuggle people. His lawyers say the charges are because he was wrongly sent back to El Salvador in March. This happened after the Supreme Court said he must come back. Abrego Garcia's lawyers say the government witnesses are not telling the truth because they want help with their immigration. The charges started from a traffic stop in 2022 in Tennessee. Abrego Garcia was driving nine people, and the police thought he was smuggling them. But they let him go with only a warning. Before the court meeting, government lawyers said Abrego Garcia was dangerous and might run away. They said he was selling drugs and guns, and hurting women he drove. Because of these charges, Ben Schrader, who was a main lawyer, left his job.
