The last person missing from a boat that overturned on Lake Tahoe in California was found on Monday. The boat capsized during a strong thunderstorm over the weekend. This means that eight people have now died.

A 27-foot boat with ten people on board overturned on Saturday afternoon. This happened near D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest side of Lake Tahoe. The U.S. Coast Guard said that a storm caused large waves, which led to the boat flipping over.

Two people were rescued right away and taken to a hospital, but their condition is not known. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said that six bodies were found later on Saturday, and a seventh was found on Sunday evening. Divers looked in a part of Lake Tahoe and found the last body on Monday afternoon.

Sergeant Kyle Parker said that the names of the victims will not be shared until their families have been told.

In recent years, people have died in the lake by accident, for example, by drowning. However, serious boating accidents with many deaths are rare. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said in 2022 that about six people die in the lake every summer, but a record 15 died in 2021. The department could not give updated numbers immediately.

Even weather experts were surprised by how strong the thunderstorm became. Meteorologist Matthew Chyba from the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said they had expected some rain, but the storm that hit the south side of the lake around 3 p.m. was much more powerful. Winds reached over 35 mph (56 kph) and waves grew to more than 8 feet (2.5 meters).

We didn't expect it to be so strong, Chyba said.

He said temperatures in the area were much colder than normal for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.

Chyba noted that waves reaching eight feet on Lake Tahoe were "pretty significant" and added, "They were really making the lake shake."

Lake Tahoe is a well-known spot for summer fun, attracting boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders. This beautiful, very cold lake sits on the border of California and Nevada and is one of the deepest in the United States, second only to Crater Lake in Oregon.

Officials haven't given any information about the people on the boat that overturned, or whether the boat was rented or owned.

The severe storm on Saturday dissipated within approximately two hours.

Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven friends, celebrating a bachelorette party on Saturday, when the weather suddenly got worse. The wind got stronger, and the waves became much bigger. Glick said on Monday that the day had started sunny, but then the temperature dropped a lot, and it was hard to see.

It felt like a tsunami was just starting. I had never experienced anything like it, she said.

After about an hour, the boat returned to the dock. The water became very rough and soaked the passengers. Then, it started to hail.

"Seeing the overturned boats shocked us," Glick explained. "Being soaked through, we were freezing and shivering badly. Our feet were numb, and our toes were turning blue. It was definitely one of the most frightening experiences I've had in my life. The sudden storm was truly terrifying."

KCRA-TV got a video that showed boats at a nearby marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
