A federal appeals court will probably let former President Donald Trump keep control of California National Guard troops. These troops were sent to Los Angeles after protests about immigration raids. This decision comes after a lower court told Trump to give control back to Governor Gavin Newsom. Governor Newsom did not agree with sending the troops, saying Trump had used too much power. The result of this case could greatly affect a president's power to send soldiers into U.S. cities. This is important because it's the first time since 1965 that a president has used a state's National Guard without the governor's permission. The judges, two chosen by Trump and one by Biden, suggested that presidents have a lot of freedom under the federal law. However, they did not agree with the Justice Department lawyer who said that courts could not check Trump's decision. The court's decision is expected soon.
