On Tuesday night, police in Los Angeles quickly put a curfew in place in the city centre. They arrested people soon after it started. Police officers on horses were used, and they used objects to control the crowd. The crowd of hundreds of people were protesting against President Donald Trump's new rules about people coming into the country.

The National Guard members stood behind plastic shields and watched, but they didn't seem to help with the arrests.

After some hours, many protesters had left, but there were still some small fights happening. These fights were not as big as the ones from the nights before. Officials said that the curfew was needed to stop people from damaging things and stealing, because some people were trying to make problems.

Governor Gavin Newsom, who is a Democrat, said that Trump used too many soldiers from the National Guard in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a very big city. He also sent some Marines, but people did not see them in the city on Tuesday.

Newsom asked a court to stop the military from helping immigration officers. Some soldiers are protecting the officers while they arrest people. Newsom said this will cause more problems and make people angry. The court will talk about this on Thursday, so the government can continue doing these things for a few more days.

This change means soldiers will be closer to helping the police with things like sending people out of the country. This is part of the president's plan to control who comes into the country. The soldiers can hold people who attack them, but the police will be the ones to arrest them.

Trump has called on more than 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines. City and state leaders did not want this. They were first sent to protect government buildings.

Protests have also started in other cities around the country, like Dallas, Austin, Chicago, and New York. In New York, a thousand people gathered, and the police arrested some of them.

In Texas, police in Austin used chemicals to stop a protest on Monday. Governor Greg Abbott said that soldiers are ready to help in places where people plan to protest. His spokesman said this on Tuesday evening.

Jesse Salame, who is a police chief, said that guard members went to San Antonio. He didn't know how many went or why they went there.

The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, said the city had an emergency because of the protests. This was on the fifth day of the protests. She also said that people must stay home from 8 p.m. on Tuesday until 6 a.m. on Wednesday. She thinks this will be needed for some days.

Things changed a lot after 23 shops were robbed, Bass said at a meeting on Tuesday.

The curfew is for a small part of the city center, about 2.5 square kilometers. This is the area where people have been protesting since Friday. The city of Los Angeles is very large, about 1,300 square kilometers.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said that the curfew is not for people who live in that area, people who are homeless, reporters, or police and emergency workers.

McDonnell said that bad and dangerous actions had been increasing since Saturday.

McDonnell said, "The curfew is important to keep people safe and protect things after many days of trouble in the city."

Trump said he might use a special law called the Insurrection Act. This law lets the president send the army into the U.S. to stop big problems or make sure laws are followed. It is one of the strongest powers a U.S. president can use in a difficult situation.

"If there's a big problem, I would use it. We will see," he said in his office.

Later, the president gave a speech at Fort Bragg to celebrate the army's 250th birthday. In his speech, he called the protesters "animals" and said they were like "a foreign enemy".

Trump said Los Angeles is in a very bad state, but Bass and Newsom say that's not true at all.

On Tuesday evening, Newsom gave a speech and said that Trump's actions were the start of an attack on democracy.

"California might be the first, but it won't stop there. Other states will follow," he said.

Newsom told people not to start violence, but he asked them to oppose the president's actions.

Donald Trump wants you to be loyal and quiet. He wants you to agree with what is happening, he said. "Don't do it."

Last Friday, protests started because the police arrested many workers in Los Angeles. These workers did not have the correct immigration papers. People blocked a big road and burned cars during the weekend. The police used tear gas and rubber bullets to stop the protests.

The protests have mostly been in the city center. This city has 4 million people. Thousands of people have protested peacefully near the City Hall. Also, hundreds of people have protested at a government building. Some immigrants are kept there after being arrested at work.

Even though people protested, immigration officers are still working in the county. City leaders and groups say they have seen them at libraries, car washes, and Home Depots. Schools in Los Angeles are having more security at graduations because they are worried about immigration officers. Some schools are letting parents watch on Zoom.

McDonnell said that police arrested 197 people on Tuesday. 67 of them were arrested because they were illegally on the 101 highway.

On Monday, some stores were broken into. The police did not say if it was connected to the protests.

Most people were arrested because they did not leave when the police told them to. Some others were arrested for hurting someone with a weapon, stealing, damaging things, and trying to kill someone by throwing a fire bomb. Seven police officers were hurt, and at least two went to the hospital and then went home.

Pete Hegseth, who is the Defense Secretary, said on Tuesday that they will probably use more soldiers in the U.S.

The Pentagon said sending the National Guard and Marines cost $134 million.
