Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a builder from Maryland, said he is not guilty of helping people cross the border illegally. This happened in a court in Tennessee. His lawyers think the charges are just an excuse because he was wrongly sent back to El Salvador in March. The case started after the Supreme Court said he should come back. Abrego Garcia's lawyers said that the people who spoke for the government were not telling the truth. They said these people helped the government to get special help with their own immigration problems. The charges came from a time in 2022 when police stopped his car in Tennessee. Abrego Garcia was driving nine people, and the police thought he was smuggling them. But they only gave him a warning and let him go. Before the court meeting, government lawyers said Abrego Garcia was a danger to the community and might try to run away. They said he sold drugs and guns, and hurt women he drove. Because of these charges, Ben Schrader, who was in charge of criminal cases for the U.S. Attorney's Office, left his job.
