On Monday, the Supreme Court decided that the government can quickly send some migrants to other countries. Before, migrants could try to stop this, but now they might not be able to.

The main court did not explain its reasons in the short order. Justice Sonia Sotomayor and the other two liberal judges strongly disagreed.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, said that sending people who are not from America back to other countries might begin again soon. She said, "Get the planes ready to send people back," and called this decision "a win for the safety of people in America."

But a judge said that one flight to South Sudan, which was going to send people away, would not happen now.

The people on the May flight were from countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cuba. They had done serious crimes in the U.S., so officials could not send them back to their home countries fast.

Their lawyer, Trina Realmuto, said they could be put in prison, hurt, or even killed if they are sent to South Sudan. She leads the National Immigration Litigation Alliance.

A judge in Boston said that the immigrants can still talk about their problems in court. They were sent to a navy base in Djibouti.

This case is happening while the government is trying to make many people leave the U.S. These people do not have permission to be here. The government has said it will send millions of people away.

Abigail Jackson from the White House said the President has the power to make sure immigration laws are followed. He can also send dangerous people who are not citizens out of the country. The Constitution and Congress gave him this power. She also said the Supreme Court's decision shows that the President can send away people who are not citizens and have done crimes. This will help to "Make America Safe Again."

Sotomayor disagreed with the court's decision. She wrote that it could put many people in danger of being hurt or dying. She also said that the Trump administration won, even though they did not follow a court rule before.

The government has shown it doesn't follow the law. It believes it can send people to any place without telling them or letting them speak. Two other judges, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, agreed with her.

South Sudan is a very new country and also very poor. Since it became free from Sudan in 2011, there has been a lot of fighting. Now, political problems are getting worse, and people are worried there might be another war.

The Justice Department said in court papers that the government is thinking about the order to decide what to do next.

The highest court stopped a rule from April. This rule allowed immigrants to say that being sent to another country would be dangerous for them. They could say this even if they had already used all their legal chances.

He found that sending people to South Sudan in May was against his order. He told immigration to let people talk to their lawyers about it. Immigration officials kept the people in a shipping container in Djibouti. It was a difficult place for them and the officers guarding them.

The government has made agreements with countries like Panama and Costa Rica to keep immigrants. This is because some countries do not want their citizens back after they are sent away from the U.S. Sotomayor wrote that the people sent to South Sudan in May were told less than 16 hours before they had to leave.

Murphy, who was chosen by President Joe Biden, made a decision. This decision did not stop people from being sent to other countries. But he said that people must have a real chance to explain that they could be in serious danger if they are sent to another country.

In another similar situation, the Trump government brought back a gay man from Guatemala. He had been sent to Mexico by mistake, and he said he was attacked and robbed there. He was the first person we know of who was allowed back into the U.S. after being sent away since Trump's second term started.

The judges had a similar problem. Trump wanted to send Venezuelans, who were said to be gang members, to a famous prison in El Salvador. These people would not have had many chances to speak against this in court.

But in that situation, the judges stopped people from being sent away. They used an old law from the 1700s. They said people need enough time to go to court before they are removed.

The court, which has mostly conservative judges, has supported Trump in other immigration cases. This allowed his government to stop temporary legal help for nearly a million immigrants.
