On Monday, they found the body of the last person who was missing. Their boat turned over on Lake Tahoe in California during a big storm at the weekend. Now, eight people have died.
On Saturday afternoon, a boat with ten people on it turned over near D.L. Bliss State Park. This happened because a storm made big waves. The U.S. Coast Guard said this. The boat was 27 feet (8 meters) long.
Two people were saved quickly and went to hospital, but we don't know how they are. Six dead people were found on Saturday, and another one on Sunday evening, police said. Divers looked in the lake and found the last dead person on Monday afternoon.
Kyle Parker said they will not say the names of the people who died until their families know.
People have drowned in the lake in recent years. Other accidents have also caused deaths. Big boat accidents with many people dying are not common. In 2022, the South Lake Tahoe Police said that about six people die in the lake each summer. But in 2021, 15 people died, which was a record. The police do not have the newest numbers yet.
The storm was very strong and surprised everyone, even the weather forecasters. They thought it would rain, but not so much. A man from the weather service said the storm hit the south side of the lake at about 3 p.m. The wind was faster than 35 miles per hour, and the waves were taller than 8 feet.
"We didn't think it would be this strong," Chyba said.
He said it was much colder than usual there, and this might have made the weather change quickly.
Chyba said that the big waves on Lake Tahoe were "pretty important". He said, "They were really moving the lake around."
Lake Tahoe is a nice place to visit in summer. People like to go boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding there. This very cold and clear lake is in both California and Nevada. It is one of the deepest lakes in the United States, with only Crater Lake in Oregon being deeper.
The officials haven't given any information about the people on the boat that sank. They also haven't said if the boat was rented or if someone owned it.
The storm that happened on Saturday was over in about two hours.
Brittany Glick was on a boat she rented with seven friends for a party on Saturday. They were having fun when the wind started to blow harder and the waves became bigger. She said that the day started sunny, but then it suddenly got colder and they couldn't see very well.
She said, "It felt like a big wave was starting. I have never felt anything like it."
After about an hour, the boat returned to the dock. The water became very rough, and the passengers got wet. Then, it started to hail.
"We were shocked to see the boats turned over," Glick said. "And we were very cold because we were wet. We were shaking a lot. Our feet felt like they weren't there, and our toes were turning blue. It was one of the scariest things that has happened to me in 30 years. The storm arrived very fast. It was very frightening."
KCRA-TV got a video. It showed boats at a marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
