CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) — Had the television remote control never been conceived, those perpetually channel-flipping hedonists and their indolent, sofa-bound counterparts would be compelled to find alternative grounds for discord.
Upon further reflection, such archetypes of idle diversion might well have failed to materialize altogether.
It may prove inscrutable to anyone under the age of forty, yet there existed an era when altering the channel necessitated rising from one's seat, traversing the room to the "television set," and manually rotating a "dial."
At Zenith Electronics, researchers identified an exigent technical deficiency demanding expeditious resolution.
The inaugural television remote control, marketed under the moniker “Lazy Bone” in 1950, lacked wireless capability, precipitating frequent mishaps wherein users stumbled over its tethered cord.
The inaugural wireless remote control, the “Flash-Matic,” which emerged five years later, bore a disconcerting resemblance to a firearm and operated via light signals.
The television set was entirely indiscriminate in its reception, and on sunlit days spurious signals could precipitate involuntary channel shifts.
The subsequent year witnessed the introduction of Zenith’s “Space Command,” which functioned through acoustic waves.
On those pioneering models, depressing a button elicited an audible clicking sound—hence the appellation “clicker.”
The deployment of remote controls reliant on infrared signals dates back to the 1980s, an era when the advent of cable television's expansive multichannel framework elevated such devices to a state of absolute indispensability.
“Misplacing the remote control amidst the couch cushions once precipitated a level of consternation as acute as that engendered by mislaying a mobile phone in the present day,” observes David Bianculli, television critic for NPR’s “Fresh Air” and a professor at Rowan University in New Jersey.
The remote control fundamentally reshaped the paradigms of television programming and viewership.
The seamless continuity of a network's broadcast schedule became paramount: how could one deter a viewer from defecting to another channel?
CBS's Saturday evening lineup during the 1970s, spanning from "All in the Family" through to "The Carol Burnett Show," constituted a masterclass in sequential programming.
NBC, for its part, once designated Thursday evenings as "must-see TV."
The nascent epoch of cable television engendered the channel-surfer, an individual who, with desultory intent, depressed the remote's keys to traverse the spectrum of available programming.
This milieu conferred a premium upon the ostentatious; the imperative was to seize the viewer's gaze instantaneously.
Remote controls are fraught with inherent deficiencies: they amplify self-serving tendencies, proliferate with such reckless abandon that one is left bewildered as to which to employ, and their batteries invariably expire at the most inopportune of moments.
As appliances acquire the capacity for auditory perception, the obsolescence of the remote control may well be imminent.
Until that transition transpires, however, one is consigned to the perennial quest for the errant clicker's whereabouts.
Concealed within the refrigerator during your procurement of a snack?
Sequestered in the lavatory?

The flush toilet may well rank as the most civilised innovation ever conceived by humankind, yet the remote control stands as its worthy successor in importance—indeed, its significance rivals that of procreation itself.
That observation originates from the late Zenith scientist Eugene Polley, who, in collaboration with his colleague Robert Adler, was lauded as the pioneering force behind wireless remote-control technology.
Polley may well have been experiencing a sense of proprietorial gratification.
Yet, conversely, there exists no more decisive leverage within a dynamic than the dominion over the remote control.
David Bauder, for three decades a chronicler of the television industry for Reporters, concluded his tenure upon retirement earlier this year.
