Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Monday that President Donald Trump has asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps app.

Burgum told Fox’s “Mornings with Maria” that Trump reached out to Apple directly.

He said he expected the new name to appear on the platform soon.

Apple did not comment, and its maps still showed only “Lake Ontario” as of Monday afternoon.

Google Maps already made the change for U.S. users over the weekend.

The company said it followed Trump’s recent executive order and its policy of using names from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

Google said U.S. users will see “Lake America,” Canadian users will see “Lake Ontario,” and users elsewhere will see both names.

Trump signed the order on Friday, renaming the lake during his trade war with Canada.

The move is one of his latest provocations as tariffs rise on both sides of the border.

The president cannot force Canada to accept the name.

The Seneca Nation’s leader called it a violation of a treaty over 225 years old and a “blatant disrespect” for Indigenous people.

This is not Trump’s first attempt to rename a body of water beyond U.S. borders.

Last year, he ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America.

Apple and Google later updated that name on their U.S. maps.
