Alibaba unveiled new AI chip technologies and plans for more powerful models on Tuesday.

The announcement came just days before a meeting between Chinese and U.S. leaders.

AI competition is expected to be a major theme there.

Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said the new Zhenwu V900 chip is the most powerful AI chip in China today.

He said it delivers three times the performance of the previous Zhenwu M890 chip.

Alibaba also plans to train a new AI model at the scale of five to 10 trillion parameters.

Its latest Qwen3.8-Max model has 2.4 trillion parameters.

Chinese company Moonshot says its Kimi K3, released in July, is the world's largest open model with 2.8 trillion parameters.

Alibaba also plans to expand its data centers, citing rising demand for AI computing.

It expects over 20 gigawatts of computing by 2032.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrives in Washington on Wednesday for a state visit and a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

AI, trade and tariffs are expected to be discussed.

Some analysts believe recent Chinese AI advances give Beijing more leverage in these talks.

U.S.-led export restrictions have blocked China from some cutting-edge technologies, including AI chips.

Huawei also unveiled new chip technologies last week as it looks to challenge leaders like Nvidia.

Analysts said Chinese-designed chips are gaining ground as Nvidia has been blocked from selling some of its most powerful AI chips to China.

Neil Shah of Counterpoint Research said extra computing power helps China stay strong locally.

Wu said global shortages in the AI data center supply chain are limiting how fast Alibaba can scale its compute infrastructure.
