TikTok is improving its search function by showing reviews for certain places directly in the comments under videos. This new test feature means you don't need to search again or use Google when you see a place on TikTok and want more information.
When TikTok users have this new feature, they will see a "Reviews" tab on the right when they look at the video's comments.
For example, if you find a video of Central Park in New York City where the person who made it has marked the location, you can see how many stars users gave the place, read their reviews, and look at their pictures, if they added any.
You can also click on a reviewer's username to see their TikTok profile from here. This is different from a previous Google Maps connection that used a Google Maps symbol.
While some people might like the new feature, others may feel it makes the user experience confusing when looking at content.
This action shows how TikTok is trying to improve its search features and compete with Google.
In 2022, a manager at Google said that TikTok was taking users away from its main services, Search and Maps, especially young people. Now, TikTok has become a serious rival to Google in different areas.
TikTok is a popular app for young people searching for places. Last year, they also added a feature where users can search using pictures. You can take or upload a photo to find similar products in TikTok Shop.
Also, in September 2024, TikTok started letting companies advertise on its search results page with "TikTok Search Ads Campaigns." This system uses keywords to show brands' adverts when people search.
It's not clear if TikTok will make the reviews tab available to everyone, because the company didn't want to comment before this was published. But when TechCrunch tested it, we saw that the feature only appeared on some videos that had a location tagged.
