Federal prosecutors stated that a former delivery driver admitted to working with others to defraud DoorDash of over $2.5 million. They did this by making the company pay for deliveries that never actually happened.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri admitted guilt in a San Jose federal court on Tuesday to a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, has confessed to collaborating with three individuals between 2020 and 2021 to commit fraud against a delivery company based in San Francisco, according to federal prosecutors.
Prosecutors stated that Devagiri used customer accounts to make large orders. He then used an employee's login details to access DoorDash's system and change the orders to driver accounts he and others managed. Officials said that Devagiri then made these fake driver accounts report that the orders were delivered, even though they weren't. He also changed DoorDash's systems to pay these accounts for deliveries that never happened.
Prosecutors stated that Devagiri would then use the DoorDash system to switch orders from "delivered" back to "in process." He would then manually give the orders to driver accounts that he and others managed, starting the process over again.
Prosecutors stated that the employee, who is no longer working at the company, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in November 2023 and admitted their involvement in the fraudulent scheme.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty for his involvement in the conspiracy. He could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and fined $250,000. He must appear in court again on Sept. 16.
