Google's app for iPhones is getting a new 'Simplify' tool. It uses AI to make hard or technical writing on the internet easier to understand, so you don't have to leave the page.
Simplify uses a method from Google Research that makes text easier to understand. It uses Gemini to simplify difficult writing while keeping the important information. Google's tests showed that the simpler text helped people understand and remember the original details better.
By offering a feature like 'Simplify,' Google likely wants people to keep using its tools and services for difficult topics, instead of using popular tools from other companies like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
You can use Simplify by choosing text on a website you visit in the Google app and then tapping the "Simplify" button that appears.
Google's research blog shows an example of what this feature might look like. For example, you might read a sentence that says: "This is a complicated condition that damages the lung tissue, causes widespread scarring, changes the lung's immune cells, increases the production of substances that affect the immune system, and significantly changes the blood vessels in the lungs."
This serious lung problem is caused by two main things: emphysema, which damages the small air sacs in the lungs, and fibrosis, which is a lot of scarring in the lung tissue. The immune cells in the lungs change, and the body makes more substances that help control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change a lot.
Google states that the purpose of this function is to help people understand difficult subjects they may find when learning new things online.
In a blog post, Google said, "Our aim is for our models to rewrite difficult ideas correctly, without adding mistakes or missing important details. The rewritten text should help people understand hard information while keeping the original meaning right."
Simplify is becoming available for iPhone and iPad users this week.
