Elon Musk said that Tesla plans to start its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, around June 22nd, but this date could still change.
Musk said on his social media platform, X, that the date could change because Tesla is "very careful" about safety.
Investors, analysts, and Tesla fans have been waiting for the self-driving taxis since Musk said earlier this year that the service would begin in Austin in June.
Last month, Musk told CNBC that the taxis will first be watched remotely and only allowed in specific safe parts of the city. He said he planned to begin with about ten taxis, quickly add more, and then provide the service in cities like Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco.
For ten years, Musk has been promising that fully self-driving cars would be ready "next year." Now, there is a lot of pressure because Tesla is actually starting a self-driving taxi service. Tesla's sales of electric cars have decreased because of more competition, changes to their most popular car (the Model Y), and the effect of Musk's increased involvement in politics.
The launch in Austin took place after Musk had a public disagreement with President Trump about new tax laws. Some experts are worried that Trump might react negatively, possibly by asking federal safety regulators to get involved if the robotaxis have any problems.
