Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy were two of the six quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2024 draft.

Both are off to rough starts this season.

Maye was the MVP runner-up in 2025.

He led the NFL in passer rating, completion percentage and yards per attempt.

But in his first three games this season, he has turned the ball over seven times.

He has produced only one touchdown.

That is the first time any quarterback has done that since 2007, when Drew Brees did it and still went on to a strong season.

Maye's 58.6 passer rating also puts him in company that includes recent draft busts.

That group includes Anthony Richardson, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson and DeShone Kizer.

New England has scored just 29 points on offense through three games.

McCarthy was traded by Minnesota after a quick flameout.

He is now with the New York Giants.

He is only the sixth quarterback taken in the top 10 since 1967 to make 10 or fewer starts for his original team.

Others on that list had no success elsewhere.

They include Rich Campbell, Trey Lance, Jack Thompson, Marty Domres and Andre Ware.

Elsewhere, backup quarterbacks are thriving.

Quarterbacks who did not start Week 1 are 6-0 in fill-in appearances this season.

Case Keenum, Michael Penix, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Drew Lock and Carson Wentz all won.

ESPN reports this is the first time since the 1970 merger that six such quarterbacks won in Week 2 or Week 3, excluding 1987.

Keenum's win gave him victories with seven franchises, tying Ryan Fitzpatrick's record.
