Japan has announced its new sumo grand champion, Onosato. He is the first Japanese competitor to reach this important rank since 2017. Recently, Mongolian competitors have been the strongest in this sport. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to sumo's top rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The new champion is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly damaged by a serious earthquake and tsunami in 2024. Onosato promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion creates a rivalry with Hoshoryu, who was born in Mongolia and is the other current yokozuna. They have a tournament planned for July in Nagoya.
