The Alpine Formula 1 team has changed its drivers. Franco Colapinto will race in at least the next five races instead of Jack Doohan.
Alpine said the change happened on Wednesday, a day after Oliver Oakes stopped being the team boss. The team also said Flavio Briatore will stay as an advisor and do Oakes' job.
Alpine announced that Colapinto will race with Pierre Gasly from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. They will make a new decision about him before the British Grand Prix in July.
After six races, the Alpine team is in ninth place in the Formula 1 standings. The next race will be held from May 16th to 18th in Imola.
During Sunday’s race in Miami, Doohan hit another car on the first lap and then crashed on the second lap.
Before the Miami Grand Prix, Oakes said that stories in the media about changing drivers were false, and that the young Australian driver would continue to race.
Doohan, who didn't score any points in his seven Grand Prix races and finished best in 13th place, will go back to being the team's reserve driver.
Jack Doohan, whose father Mick Doohan was a five-time motorcycle world champion, started his Formula 1 career in the last race of 2024. This year, he began the season for Alpine at the Australian Grand Prix. He took the place of Esteban Ocon, who left Alpine after a difficult 2024 season.
Colapinto became a reserve driver for Alpine in January. Before that, he raced for Williams in 2024 and got five points after he replaced Logan Sargeant in August.
