The Golden State Warriors plan to play without Stephen Curry for at least the next three games against Minnesota. This is because a medical scan showed a small injury to his left leg muscle.
The Warriors announced that Curry would miss at least a week because of the injury he got on Tuesday night. He had to leave early in the second quarter of Game 1, but his team still won 99-88. Before he left, he scored 13 points in 13 minutes. This helped Golden State get a good lead and win on the Timberwolves' home court.
Coach Steve Kerr explained, "In the playoffs every year, you need to adapt to things like game plans, injuries, or player lineups. So, we just have to adapt. We have experience with this and are sure we can succeed again."
Game 2 will be in Minneapolis on Thursday, and then the teams will go to San Francisco for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 on Monday. It seems the earliest Curry could play again is in Game 5 on May 14, which is good because there are three days off before Game 6 on May 18.
Curry has never had a serious hamstring injury, so it's unclear how long he will be away. It's also uncertain if the Warriors can play well enough without their best 3-point shooter until he comes back later in the series. However, they should not rely on that happening.
Kerr said, "We think our defense is the best in the league, and we've shown that in the last few months."
However, this Golden State team is not as strong as the earlier teams, because Curry and Draymond Green were younger then, and important players like Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala were key to their wins. In 2018, they also had Kevin Durant.
After winning Game 1, the Warriors were happy with how everyone played together, especially Jimmy Butler, Buddy Hield, and Green. Coach Kerr also used 12 different players in the game.
Without Curry, Butler will handle the ball most of the time, like he did on Tuesday. The six-time All-Star joined the Warriors in a trade from Miami three months ago and helped the team get better at offense and defense. He scored 20 points, had 11 rebounds, and made eight assists in Game 1. He scored 20 or more points in four out of the five games he played in the first round against Houston.
"Everyone is ready. Everyone who plays wants to make good moves," said Timberwolves guard Mike Conley. "So you need to focus even more on the game and who you are playing against and how they usually play. Because they are not just looking for Curry. Of course, Buddy and Jimmy will be more active, but they have players who can score points, and they might try to do that together as a team."
