Paris Saint-Germain survived many attacks and showed great flexibility on Wednesday to stop and beat a motivated Arsenal 2-1. This victory means they will play in the Champions League final and have another chance to win the title they really want.
PSG usually has the ball a lot, but they didn't have it much at the start and looked unsure. But they found a way to win by using fast attacks and their goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. They won 3-1 in total over the two games.
PSG got to the final of the top European competition for only the second time ever for the club. The last time they reached the final was five years ago, when they finished second. This achievement came in the first season after their main star player, Kylian Mbappé, left to play for Real Madrid.
The team did not replace Mbappé, a star player who left, with another famous player. This was a big change for the club because for over ten years, the owners had spent a lot of money to get famous players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
The club's new methods helped coach Luis Enrique create a strong, renewed team that played some of the best football in Europe.
From the start, I said our goal was to work hard enough to be able to make history – and that is still our goal,” Enrique said. “We want to be the first to win the trophy we have been waiting for for a long time. This project has changed since last year, and I feel very good here as a coach because the president gives me the freedom and support to build what we want. We change our plans depending on what is available to create a team that improves every day.
The French club will attempt to win its first Champions League title when it plays against Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich.
PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi told CBS Sports: “We trust our coach and our players. They are young, talented, and eager to succeed. They fight hard for the team, for the city, and for the club. That’s what truly matters.”
With one fixture remaining, our task is far from complete.
Inter, who have won the European title three times, beat Barcelona with a total score of 7-6 over two games. This was one of the best semi-finals in the history of this competition.
PSG beat Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Arsenal. Last year, they lost to Borussia Dortmund at this stage, and in 2020, Bayern Munich beat them in the final.
PSG scored first in the 27th minute after an Arsenal defender kicked a free kick to the edge of the box. The ball went to Fabian Ruiz, who hit the ball into the goal with a great shot.
Achraf Hakimi scored with a precise shot in the 72nd minute to make the score 2-0, before Bukayo Saka scored a goal for the Gunners.
Last week in London, Arsenal had difficulties at the start of the game, finding it hard to deal with PSG's strong play in the middle of the field, and they lost by one goal.
This time, stronger because midfielder Thomas Partey was back, Arsenal had 61 attacks, while PSG had 26.
The visiting team soon had a good chance when Declan Rice jumped high but didn't score with his head, and Gabriel Martinelli's shot was stopped by Donnarumma.
Arsenal attacked well on the sides against PSG and had another good chance in the eighth minute. Martin Ødegaard shot strongly from outside the box, and Donnarumma had to make another good save.
PSG had to wait for opportunities to attack quickly, but there were not many.
Finally, in the 17th minute, a chance appeared. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, finding some room on the left, moved inside onto his right foot and hit a very accurate shot that hit the post.
PSG didn't take advantage of a bad pass from William Saliba. But Désiré Doué's shot went directly to Raya and wasn't very strong.
Soon after 60 minutes of play, Arsenal had another good chance when Saka kicked the ball with a curve. It looked like it would go into the top corner of the goal, but Donnarumma used his long body to stop the ball.
Vitinha then missed a penalty after VAR decided Myles Lewis-Skelly had touched the ball with his hand. Soon after, PSG scored their second goal when Hakimi shot the ball into the corner after a pass from Ousmane Dembélé, who came into the game later.
Arsenal continued to attack until the end, and Saka scored in the 76th minute, reducing the difference in the score.
