Amazon reported weaker third-quarter results.
Wall Street analysts expected more.
Amazon also gave a careful sales outlook for the fourth quarter.
This period includes the key holiday shopping time.
The company is based in Seattle.
It posted strong growth in its cloud unit.
The unit is called Amazon Web Services.
Sales there rose 39.3% in the quarter.
The quarter ended Sept. 30.
That was up from 37% in the prior quarter.
Amazon said this was the fastest growth in nearly five years.
But shares fell more than 5% after the market closed.
Investors focused on the core business.
Amazon said it expects fourth-quarter net sales of $240 billion to $247 billion.
That is a 12% to 16% increase from a year earlier.
Analysts had expected $244.16 billion.
The company spoke earlier this month.
It said it would hire 300,000 U.S. seasonal workers for the shopping period.
That is up from 250,000 last year.
Investors are also watching Amazon's heavy spending on artificial intelligence.
They want to know if it is starting to pay off.
CEO Andy Jassy spoke in July.
He said capital spending is now expected to total $220 billion.
Most of it is for AI.
That is up from the $200 billion plan announced in February.
It is also well above last year's $128 billion.
Jassy said higher memory chip costs are the main reason for the increase.
Amazon reported net income of $20.69 billion.
That is $1.89 per share.
A year earlier it was $21.19 billion, or $1.95 per share.
Net sales rose 12% to $201.94 billion.
Amazon said a calendar shift hurt sales.
The shift was for its Prime Day event.
This year the event fell in the second quarter for most large countries.
Without that shift, sales growth would have been about 4% higher, the company said.
Analysts had expected $1.97 per share, according to FactSet.
They had expected sales of $202.2 billion.
The results come as worries weigh on the AI industry.
Alphabet reported weaker summer growth late Wednesday.
Analysts expected more.
Alphabet also said it used more cash.
Property and equipment purchases topped $51 billion.
Its stock fell sharply on Thursday.
