After oscillating through a pair of abrupt reversals, equities concluded a tumultuous session of trading on Wall Street Thursday at approximately their opening levels.
The S&P 500 concluded the session virtually unchanged, edging down by less than 0.1% amid a series of oscillations between losses and gains.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 161 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite gained less than 0.1%.
Equities have decelerated their advance since the S&P 500 ascended to the cusp of its record peak earlier this week, as mounting pressures emanating from the bond market have intensified.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury surged to 5.20% from 5.11% late Wednesday, reverting to levels last witnessed in 2007.
Elevated yields act as a drag on the broader economy by rendering borrowing more costly, while simultaneously eroding the valuations of equities and other investments.
Yields ascended throughout the morning, exerting downward pressure on equities, until they underwent an abrupt reversal in the midday hours.
The 10-year yield descended from nearly 5.17% to less than 5.13% over approximately 20 minutes before ultimately resuming an upward trajectory.
Yields were once again tracking the trajectory of oil prices, which have remained erratic owing to uncertainty as to when the war with Iran will permit crude oil to flow unimpeded once more from the Middle East.
The price of a barrel of Brent crude, within the most actively traded segment of the market, plummeted from $102 to approximately $99 in the span of mere minutes at midday on Thursday.
It subsequently rallied to settle at $100.22, registering a 2.1% advance over the preceding day.
Certain reversals leave equities more or less where they began.
It is not merely apprehensions regarding costly oil and inflation that have propelled Treasury yields upward.
The U.S. economy persists in its expansion, which likewise underpins yields.
On Thursday, a report revealed that fewer U.S. workers had applied for unemployment benefits the previous week, thereby further entrenching expectations for the economy.
Figures of such magnitude might well persuade the Federal Reserve that the economy is sufficiently robust to withstand further increases to short-term interest rates.
Last week, in a bid to temper the economy and drain some of the fuel propelling inflation, the Fed raised its principal interest rate for the first time in three years.
Traders now assign appreciably better than even odds that the Fed might raise rates twice more by year’s end, according to data from CME Group.
Hitherto, the robustness of the aggregate economy has enabled American corporations to persist in posting formidable profit growth.
That, in turn, has shored up their share prices to a comparatively resilient degree, notwithstanding anxieties over war, inflation and tariffs.
"The headlines have grown increasingly portentous, yet the fundamental catalysts underpinning growth remain unimpaired," strategists at Barclays observed in a report.
"So long as AI-related capital expenditure, US corporate profitability, and consumer spending persist in surpassing expectations, the economy and markets would appear poised to withstand more restrictive central banks and elevated rates."
Stitch Fix numbered among the latest U.S. companies late Wednesday to disclose quarterly results surpassing analysts' projections.
Yet its stock nonetheless plummeted 21.6% after it cautioned that “a more challenging consumer environment” might stymie its revenue growth in the forthcoming fiscal year.
Darden Restaurants, the corporate entity that owns Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, saw its shares tumble 3% upon reporting a quarterly profit that dovetailed precisely with analysts' forecasts.
Elevated yields in the bond market depress equity valuations across the board, and they frequently exact their heaviest toll on those equities perceived as the most richly priced.
This renders AI stocks the prime target, having surged for years amid the frenzy surrounding the technology.
Elevated yields likewise render corporate borrowing more onerous for the financing of AI data centre construction, a dynamic that could decelerate their buildout and temper demand for AI chips.
Nvidia slid 0.4%, thereby constituting the most substantial drag on the S&P 500.
On the winning side of Wall Street stood Everpure.
The data storage and management company's stock surged 11.2% after it stood by its financial forecasts for this fiscal year and signalled that it anticipates revenue growth to accelerate in the next.
In aggregate, the S&P 500 declined 1.90 to 7,704.13 points.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 161.61 to 51,349.98, whilst the Nasdaq composite advanced 3.34 to 26,939.37.
Across much of the globe, equity indexes abroad registered modest declines, among the more pronounced movements being a 1.2% drop in Shanghai and a 0.8% gain in Tokyo.
