On Monday, the European Union levied sanctions against nearly 1,600 Russian individuals and entities tied to the country’s arms industry, singling out in particular those suspected of complicity in the manufacture of components for drones and missiles.
In what constituted the most sweeping single tranche of sanctions since the Kremlin embarked upon full-scale war against Ukraine nearly five years prior, the EU likewise designated 77 individuals accused of orchestrating, staffing, or contesting “sham elections” in occupied Ukrainian territories.
In announcing the sanctions, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas remarked that upwards of half of them “address the production chain for the ballistic missiles Russia uses to kill Ukrainian civilians every day.”
"This is scarcely the juncture at which to slacken the pressure on Moscow; rather, it is the juncture at which to redouble it," she said.
The EU stated that the companies appear on a roster established by the Russian government itself “that identifies them as belonging to the Russian military-industrial complex, and they are therefore entitled to receive subsidies.”
The EU construes those officials at the helm of the companies in question as “supporting Russia’s military and industrial complex.”
It asserted that the sanctions are directed at “mid-level suppliers that represent the ‘core’ of the Russian military industry.”
The components they furnish encompass electronics, communication equipment, radar and navigation systems, satellite and missile systems, in addition to explosives and ammunition.
The move brings the total number of Russian officials and “entities” targeted by the EU to more than 4,500, encompassing President Vladimir Putin, oligarchs suspected of backing him and scores of lawmakers, as well as banks and the shadow fleet illicitly shipping oil.
